Personal life and career

Fehn was born in Ankeny, Iowa. Prior to joining Slipknot, he played as a kicker on a college football team. Fehn joined the band around April 1997, replacing percussionist Greg Welts, who was forced out of Slipknot after the band due to personal conflicts with drummer Joey Jordison.

As well as lending his percussion talents to the band, Fehn has also sung backing vocals on a number of songs Slipknot has both recorded and performed live. Outside Slipknot, Fehn is a very keen golfer, and evidences this on the band's 2006 DVD, Voliminal: Inside the Nine, where he is interviewed while playing golf.

Fehn describes himself as a "big fan of the band" and says of Slipknot, "the world needed something like this."

Masks

Fehn uses a Tengu-style mask, which has been seen in many different colors and styles with the nose of the mask always staying at 712 inches (about 19 cm) long. He is known to own at least five variations of the mask, his best-known being the tanned, leather mask used during the Iowa era. Another well known mask of Fehn's is the red mask used mainly during the Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) World Tour. He briefly used a white mask during the band's Slipknot era, and can be seen wearing it in the album's cover art.

Fehn's mask design is most likely based on those worn by doctors during the Black Plague, where the nose was filled with herbs to 'protect' the doctor from inhaling the fumes of death. Another widely discussed influence is the possibility of the mask being based on that which was adorned by Alex and his "droogs" during the rape scene in the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange.

A third idea of the origin of the mask also comes from Commedia dell'arte, an Italian comedy which held its popularity through the 15th and 18th centuries. In particular Chris' mask resembles a version of Pantalone's phallic-nosed mask.

And a fourth idea of the Origin of the Mask is Pinocchio character

Backstage at Slipknot's second Ozzfest show, Fehn expanded on the mask to a local interviewer, saying, "This mask reflects my comic personality. Plus I chose it for the bondage factor. When you put it on, it takes you to another place. It's very hot, it's very tight, and it hurts – that goes along with the aggression we create." In a more recent interview in London, Fehn claimed that, "The smell gets worse, it smells like puke, sweat, and piss."

The mask resembles the masks of the Menos Grande from Bleach (manga).

Equipment

Fehn uses custom titanium drums that were welded by fellow Slipknot percussionist Shawn Crahan. His drums have the same set-up as those of Crahan. The only difference between Fehn and Crahan's sets are that Crahan normally has a scissor lift on his set which goes high into the air and rotates, whereas Fehn's drums can rotate between 90° and are also able to tilt in numerous directions. Fehn prefers not to use the scissor lift due to his fear of heights, and he uses a different set of drumsticks for a distinguishable sound between the two drummers: .

  • Custom Pearl timpani style drums
  • Pearl Competitor FFX-style marching snare (12x14)
  • Vic Firth Metal American Classic drum sticks
  • Two empty beer kegs

Gereja Setan

Gereja Setan (Bahasa Inggris: Church of Satan), seperti yang diungkapkan pada buku The Satanic Bible yang ditulis pada tahun 1969 oleh Anton LaVey, adalah sebuah organisasi yang berdedikasi pada penerimaan jasmaniah manusia (Man's carnal self).

Sejarah

Pada tahun 1950-an, Anton LaVey membentuk sebuah kelompok yang dinamakan The Order of the Trapezoid, yang kemudian berubah menjadi badan pengurus Gereja Setan.

…Setanisme bersifat ateis …Otodeis: kami menyembah diri kami sendiri. …Setanisme adalah materialis … Setanisme adalah lawan agama. (Vexen Crabtree, “A Description of Satanisme”)

Film populer seperti : Friday The 13th, The Crow, Devils Advocate, Interview With The Vampire, bahkan serial The X-Files mengandung alur cerita dimana setan, satanisme atau black magic menjadi bagian penting dari film. Konon tahun 1968, Anton Szandor La Vey pernah menjadi penasehat teknis sekaligus pemeran film Rosemarys Baby, film Omen 1976 disebut telah mempopulerkan satanisme.

Setan ambil jiwaku.

Jim Root (English)

James D. Root (born October 2, 1971), also known as Jim Root, or by his number #4, is an American musician known for being one of the guitarists for Slipknot, and the Lead guitarist for Stone Sour. He was the last member to join the current line-up of Slipknot, in January 1999.

Personal life and career

Root was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He has performed in bands such as Anal Blast, Atomic Opera, Deadfront and Stone Sour; the latter which he joined in 1995, and returned to along with vocalist Corey Taylor, during its revival in 2002. Prior to joining Slipknot, he worked as a screenprinter, waiter, and busboy. Root joined the band in January 1999, replacing their original guitarist, Josh Brainard, who left the band during the recording of their self-titled album, reportedly after having fulfilled his recording duties. In fact, the only song Root recorded during the album's sessions was "Purity", which is only featured on the short-lived first pressing of Slipknot. Despite this, the song has become a staple for the band's live performances. Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor invited Root to join the band based on Taylor's past experiences working with him in Stone Sour, before leaving the band to join Slipknot.

As well as lending his guitar talents to Stone Sour, Root has also performed drums on one song the band has recorded, the Come What(ever) May bonus track "The Day I Let Go". Outside Slipknot and Stone Sour, Root has appeared on Slipknot turntablist Sid Wilson's DJ Starscream album The New Leader and John 5's The Devil Knows My Name, and also appeared on the Roadrunner United project, performing the solo and harmony guitars on "Tired 'N Lonely" from the project's album The All-Star Sessions. He also appeared on Jonathan Davis and the SFA´s cover of Lil Wayne´s "Got Money".

Root has been dating Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia since 2004, when they met during the Ozzfest tour taking place that year.

Masks

Root originally used a bondage hood, inherited from Slipknot's original guitarist Josh Brainard following his departure from the band. He had pink hair at the time and would pull parts of it through a hole in the top of the mask. After a couple of performances and one photo shoot, he decided to change masks, as the bondage hood was too uncomfortable and would often distract him when playing. He then began using a jester-style mask, said to represent that side of his personality. His most recent variation of the mask remains jester-styled, but has black diamond detailing around its eyes, and a zipper in between its lips.

Mick Thompson (English)

Mickael Gordon Thomson (born November 3, 1973), also known simply as Mick, or by his number #7, is an American musician known as one of the guitarists for Slipknot.

Personal life and career

Thomson was born in Des Moines, Iowa. In his youth, he performed in bands such as Body Pit. Thomson joined Slipknot in 1996, replacing the band's guitarist, Craig Jones, who then begun to assume his role as their sampler. He employs alternate picking, drop tuning, and six string sweep arpeggios into his guitar technique.

Thomson expresses his pseudonym as #7 more than most members of Slipknot. For example, as well as being credited with the number in the liner notes of albums he has recorded, he also has the word "seven" tattooed on his left arm, and features the number "7" on the designs of at least three guitar models he has used. Outside Slipknot, Thomson has taught guitar lessons at Ye Old Guitar Shoppe, a local music shop in Des Moines, and has appeared on Malevolent Creation's album Doomsday X. He also made a guest appearance in the music video for Lupara's "No Pity on the Ants".

According to Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor, Thomson is an avid fisherman, and has a fascination with serial killers. On the topic of the latter, Thomson himself has stated, "If I were a famous killer, I'd take some of the finer points of quite a few of them - Albert Fish and Ed Gein spring to mind. But I'm not a violent person by nature. Don't fuck with me, and you'll be fine."

Mick has a number of tattoos on his body: he has the word "嫌惡" on his right arm (which means "disgust", "detest" etc in mandarin and "hate" in Japanese), the word "Seven" on his left fore arm, a "Morbid Angel" on his shoulder, an inverted cross on his upper back, "Slipknot" going down his right calf, and the zodiac sign for scorpio on his left calf.

Sid Wilson (English)

Sidney George Wilson (born January 20th, 1978) also known simply as Sid, or by his number #0 and DJ Starscream, is an American musician most widely known as the turntablist of Slipknot.

Personal life and career

Sid Wilson was born in Des Moines, notably with polydactyly, a congenital disorder that caused him to be born with an extra digit on both hands. These extra digits were removed shortly after birth, however. He performs in Slipknot, and as well tours as DJ Starscream, a name which derived from the Transformers character of the same name. He is a fan of the Transformers franchise, and even evidences this with the tattoos of the series' most prominent factions, the Autobots and Decepticons, on the back of his hands.

Wilson is notorious for his on-stage antics while performing with Slipknot. He has been known to initiate fights during shows with percussionist Shawn Crahan, to jump into the crowd and to set himself on fire. In his interview on the band's 2006 DVD, Voliminal: Inside the Nine, he stated that in the future he would cease these stunts for fear of being arrested and charged with attempted suicide for his human inferno act, and that, "When it comes to jumping off stages, there have been too many close calls." During the first show of the 2008 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival in Auburn, WA he jumped from a piece of stage equipment and broke both of his heels.

Wilson's new mask is known to have its eyebrows and mouth move in a mechanical fashion along with antennas at the top of the mask which also move, during interviews and live shows.

Outside Slipknot, Wilson has made a following in Japan as a jungle musician, under the pseudonym DJ Starscream, and is currently signed to the Japanese record label N2O Records. He recently collaborated with The Mad Capsule Markets vocalist Hiroshi Kyono on a song called "HAKAI (Deathtroy)" released on The Songs for Death Note the movie~the Last name Tribute~, a tribute album dedicated to the live action movie for the second Death Note film. a remix of the track also appeared on the Wagdug Futuristic Unity mini-album NU ЯIOT and 2008 album HAKAI. Wilson also has recently broke both heels in the mayhem festival.

Joey Jordison (English)

Nathan Jonas "Joey" Jordison (born April 26, 1975), is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is a co-founder and the primary drummer for the Grammy Award winning band Slipknot and the guitarist for the horror punk band Murderdolls.

While growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, Jordison quickly developed an interest in music; learning to play the guitar and drums. Jordison joined multiple bands throughout his high school years, which led to him be invited to join The Pale Ones, at age 20. Jordison immediately embraced the idea and quickly became involved in all aspects of the band, which evolved into Slipknot. Jordison's dedication to music led to performances and work with many other bands over his career, including Metallica, Korn, Ministry, Satyricon, OTEP, Marilyn Manson, and 3 Inches of Blood.

Biography

Early life

Jordison was born at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on April 26, 1975. He grew up in a rural area outside of Waukee. He embraced music at an early age, attributing it to the influence of his parents, "they always sat me down in front of the radio, rather than the TV." He started his first band while in elementary school. He played guitar until receiving his first drum kit as a gift from his parents at age eight. At a young age, Jordison's parents divorced, he and his two younger sisters stayed with their mother. His mother remarried and set up a funeral parlor, where Jordison would occasionally help. Jordison has stated he felt a sudden responsibility to be the man of the house, and this responsibility turned him into a more mature person at a young age.

Jordison did not enjoy his time at school, admitting, "I was really introverted and didn't have many friends." His grades suffered due to his focus on music. Despite being involved in multiple projects, he did not have his first serious band until he was 15; he formed Modifidious, in which he played drums, he later described them as "total speed-metal thrash". The band helped Jordison break new ground, playing for live crowds in support of local bands including Atomic Opera who featured Jim Root and Heads On The Wall, which featured Shawn Crahan. After a multitude of line-up changes, including the presence of Craig Jones and Josh Brainard — who would later appear in Slipknot — the band released two demos: Visceral and Mud Fuchia in 1993.

After leaving school he was hired by a local music store called Musicland. However, in March 1994, after a recommendation from a friend, he got a job at a Sinclair garage in Urbandale working the night shift. Jordison preferred the night shift, because it left his weekends free and he could hang out with his friends and listen to music while working. In early 1995, Modifidious disbanded due to a lack of interest, owed to the shift in interest from thrash metal to death metal in America. Following this Jordison joined a local band called The Rejects as a guitarist, with whom he only played a couple of shows. Jordison was also involved in a band called Anal Blast with Paul Gray; however, this was formed partly as a joke. Gray also attempted to recruit him for another band, Body Pit, but he declined the invitation to remain in The Rejects.

Slipknot

Main article: Slipknot (band)

In September 1995, Paul Gray approached Jordison while he was working, offering him a position in a new project called The Pale Ones. Intrigued and at a point where he was "lost", Jordison attended rehearsals at Anders Colsefini's basement and immediately wanted to be part of this new band. Speaking of this moment he said, "I remember trying so hard not to smile, so I didn't look like I wanted to join, I remained poker-faced, but I thought they ruled." A lot of Slipknot's early development was discussed by band members while Jordison worked night shifts at Sinclair's garage. He is considered one of the most dedicated members of the band and is involved in most elements of the band including writing, mixing and production, and is reportedly "the first to arrive and the last to leave." Each member of Slipknot is assigned a number; Joey was assigned "#1". Although Jordison has always been closely involved in almost every aspect of the creation of Slipknot and the Murderdoll's music, including the mixing and production stages, he has only fully produced one album from either band; with Slipknot's 2005 live album 9.0: Live.

Murderdolls

While touring Ozzfest in 2001 — while supporting Slipknot's album Iowa — Jordison met Tripp Eisen, then of Static-X, and the two discussed forming a side project. In 2002, Jordison revived his band The Rejects, renaming them the Murderdolls. Jordison became the Murderdoll's guitarist and he contacted Wednesday 13, of Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13, to play bass. Wednesday would eventually move to vocalist, while Ben Graves, Eric Griffin, and Acey Slade completed the band's lineup. The band signed with Roadrunner Records and released an EP entitled Right to Remain Violent. The Murderdolls would return in August 2002 with their debut album Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls.[12] The band uses horror films, including Friday the 13th and Night of the Living Dead, as an inspiration of their lyrics. On October 30, 2002, the Murderdolls made an appearance on an episode of Dawson's Creek entitled "Living Dead Girl".

Other musical endeavours

In 2001, Jordison worked on a remix of "The Fight Song" by Marilyn Manson, he also appeared in the music video for Manson's cover of "Tainted Love". Later in the year Manson revealed that Jordison had been working with him on his new album The Golden Age of Grotesque, Jordison worked with him on guitars however, the track did not appear on the album. In 2004, Jordison appeared on OTEP's album House of Secrets, drumming on six tracks for the album. In 2008, Jordison appeared on Puscifer's album "V" Is for Viagra. The Remixes, with a remix of the track "Drunk With Power".

Jordison has performed with other bands, solely as a touring member. While preparing for the Download Festival in 2004, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was hospitalized for a mysterious illness. Metallica's vocalist James Hetfield searched for volunteers to replace Ulrich; Jordison had already performed with Slipknot earlier that evening, however he and Dave Lombardo of Slayer volunteered. Jordison performed on 10 of the 13 songs that made up the set and was called their "hero of the day". In late 2004, Jordison performed with Satyricon on their tour of the United States when drummer Frost was refused entry in to the country. However the tour was cut short after guitarists Steinar Gundersen and Arnt Gronbech — who were also only touring members — were charged after sexually assaulting a fan in Toronto. In 2006, Jordison joined Ministry for their "MasterBaTour 2006" which consisted of 60 dates across the United States and Canada. He also appeared in the music video for their single "Lies Lies Lies". Korn recruited Jordison in 2007 to join them on tour when drummer David Silveria went on hiatus from the band. He also appeared in the music video for Korn's single "Evolution".

In August 2004, Jordison became involved in Roadrunner United, a celebration of Roadrunner Records' 25th anniversary. As one of four "team captains" who wrote and produced material for the album, he also performed the drum tracks for six songs and bass guitar for three. Jordison said of the experience, "I thought it was a great idea and was really excited about it, because it was a chance to work with a lot of artists that I really respected while I was growing up." In 2007, 3 Inches of Blood recruited Jordison to produce their album Fire Up the Blades. Jordison is a fan of the band and when he heard that Roadrunner wanted to have some demos produced he said; "I was the first one to jump at it, I'm like; 'I want this fucking band'." From these demos the label commissioned a record, vocalist Jamie Hopper said of Jordison; "he's an amazing producer".

Slipknot is an American band from Des Moines, Iowa. Slipknot consists of nine members, the current band members are Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. The band's line-up has remained unchanged since 1999. Each member of the band wears a unique mask.

Slipknot formed in 1995 and underwent several line-up changes following the independent release of Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. in 1996. Their self-titled debut studio album was released in 1999 and was followed by Iowa in 2001 and Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004. On August 25, 2008, the band returned to release their fourth studio album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts. The band has released three DVDs inclduing 2002's Disasterpieces, which was certified quadruple-platinum in the United States.

History

Early years (1995–1998)

Early formations of a band were beginning to form as early as 1992 with the core band members, drummer Shawn Crahan, vocalist Anders Colsefini, and bassist Paul Gray enlisting the help of guitarists Donnie Steele and Quan Nong.

In September 1995, the band The Pale Ones was created comprising Crahan on drums, Gray on bass, Colsefini on vocals and guitarist Steele. Joey Jordison joined the band shortly after, taking up the role of drummer and, subsequently, Crahan moved to percussion. The band continued to develop their vision of what the band would be, deciding to add a second guitarist, recruiting Josh Brainard and moving Colsefini to percussion along with lead vocals. The band played their first live performance under the name of Meld on December 4, 1995 at a club called Crowbar in Des Moines.[5] Soon after, Jordison suggested renaming the band "Slipknot" after their song that eventually appeared on Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat..[6] The band also began experimenting with their image, wearing grotesque make up and eventually the anti-image concept developed towards the members wearing masks.[7] Up until this point, the band had remained mainly obscured due to their desire to wait until their music was fully developed.[6]

With plenty of material ready, the band began recording in a local studio, SR Audio with Sean McMahon.[9] In February 1996, guitarist Steele left the band due to his Christian beliefs; though the other band members were prepared to allow him to stay, Steele decided to leave.[10] His replacement, Craig Jones, arrived during the mixing stages of this new project.[10] On April 4, Slipknot played their first public performance at Des Moines reggae club the Safari, where they played most of their early gigs.[11] Their second gig at the Safari was alongside Stone Sour.[11] The band began to realize again that there was need for a change, as they were adding samples to their recordings but could not produce these sounds live.[12] Subsequently, Jones moved to full-time sampler and Mick Thomson was brought in to fill the space on guitar.[12] After conflict over the mixing and mastering, the band self released their first album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. on Halloween, October 31, 1996.[13]

With the production of this album, Sean McMahon began distributing it between record and management companies, which resulted in airplay on local radio and, in turn, won a spot at Dotfest.[14] Slipknot had returned to the studio having developed new material, which demanded more vocal melody.[8] As a result, Corey Taylor was recruited from fellow Des Moines band Stone Sour; this moved Colsefini to backing vocals and percussion.[8] While experimenting with their new vocalist, the band continued to do shows at the Safari club, during one of which Colsefini surprised his band and fans alike announcing on stage that he was leaving the band.[8] The gap on percussion was the filled by Greg Welts, who was affectionately known as "Cuddles".[15] Towards the end of 1997, the band was assigned individual numbers respectively and began wearing uniform coveralls at their shows.[16]

In early 1998, the band created another small demo, which included "Spit It Out".[17] The Slipknot Demo was sent to many record labels and, along with a growing popularity on the Internet and help from their then manager Sophia John, interest grew from record labels and eventually producer Ross Robinson was contacted.[17] The band, which had a strong interest in working with Robinson, met with him and it was then decided they would work together.[18] Soon after, DJ Sid Wilson was brought in to the band after showing great interest and impressing band members.[19] With the acquisition of Ross Robinson, interest grew and the band began getting offers from record labels.[20] On July 6, 1998 Welts was asked to leave the band becoming the first (and only) band member to be ultimately fired from the band.[21] The reasons behind this are unclear, Chris Fehn replaced Welts on percussion and on July 8 they signed to Roadrunner Records.[22][23]

In late 1998, Slipknot entered the recording studio to work on their debut album.[25] In the early new year, guitarist Brainard decided to leave the band due to personal reasons.[26] His replacement was Jim Root leaving the band with the line-up they retain.[24] Recording finished in early 1999,[27] and the band attended the Ozzfest which began in March.[13] On June 29, 1999, the band released their eponymous album Slipknot.[28] Regarding the album, Rick Anderson of Allmusic wrote "You thought Limp Bizkit was heavy? They're The Osmonds. Slipknot is something else entirely."[28]

Slipknot included variations of previously released songs, including "(sic)"; a version of the previous song "Slipknot". These versions were faster than their previous recordings and this shift in intensity was welcomed by old fans.[24] In the same year, Slipknot released their first home video Welcome to Our Neighborhood (which was later released on DVD in 2003). In early 2000, Slipknot was certified platinum, a first for an album released by Roadrunner Records.[29] In July 2001, Q named Slipknot as one of the "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time".[30]

Iowa and side projects (2001–2003)

The band had created a huge fan base, and the expectations for their follow up album were great. They went back into the studio in early 2001 to work on a new album.[31] Iowa, the band's second album with Roadrunner Records, was released on August 28, 2001. Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic said "It's really all you could ask for in a Slipknot album, and then some",[32] and David Fricke of Rolling Stone called the album "the first great record of the nu metal era."[33] It was also a commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard album charts, and at number one on the UK album chart.[34] In mid-2001, the band once again toured with Ozzfest.[13] The band also appeared in the concert scene of the 2002 movie Rollerball.[35] In the same year, the BBC said that Slipknot stole the show and proved entertaining after the band performed at Reading Festival in England.[36] In the same year Slipknot released their second visual output with the release of their DVD Disasterpieces.[37]

2002 also saw the first serious musical projects for Slipknot members outside of the band. Lead vocalist Taylor and guitarist Root revived their band Stone Sour with the release of their eponymous debut album Stone Sour.[38] Drummer Jordison also had his own project in which he took up the role of guitarist in the Murderdolls.[39] Slipknot planned to work on a third album towards the end of 2002 but the band was experiencing problems.[40] At this time there was rumours concerning whether the band had split and the possibility of a third album.[24] By mid-2003 Crahan also had a new side project, To My Surprise, in which he worked with producer Rick Rubin.[41]

Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses) and hiatus (2003–2007)

It was the rebirth of Slipknot, you know what I mean it was like... us coming back together, pushing out the vibe that had gotten in there and kinda started pulling people away. But we figured out that you know, we do have to get space you know, we do need to let people be sometimes.

Paul Gray on Slipknot's third album[42]

In late 2003, Slipknot began writing and recording with producer Rick Rubin,[43] who had previously worked with artists such as Johnny Cash, System of a Down, and Slayer.[13][44] . Roadrunner Records also announced they would be no longer be distributing Slipknot's albums in Scandanavia, due to fanancial terms. However Slipknot managed to pen a deal with Nuclear Blast Records in early 2003 for the releases in Scandanavia. The band released their third album, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) on May 24, 2004, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200.[45] Johnny Loftus of Allmusic called the album "a satisfying, carefully crafted representation of [the band's] career to date",[46] while Robert Cherry of Rolling Stone said the album "experiments with even newer extremes, which in Slipknot's case means tunefulness and traditional song structures."[47] The title of the album denotes that this is their third album, band members later mentioned that they do not consider Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. as an album which reflects the band.[48] In 2004, the band toured on the Ozzfest for a third time,[49] the same year they made their first appearance at Download Festival[50] where Jordison replaced Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich after he was rushed to hospital.[51] In 2005, Slipknot made live appearances without percussionist Crahan—who was supporting his wife during an illness—including their return to Download Festival.[52]

They released their first live album, 9.0: Live which included recordings from shows in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Osaka, Singapore, and Tokyo. The album was released on November 1, 2005 and peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200.[53] In 2006, the band won their first and only Grammy for Best Metal Performance with "Before I Forget".[54] Later that year, Slipknot released their third DVD Voliminal: Inside the Nine.[55]

Several members of the band collaborated with other artists on the Roadrunner United: The All-Star Sessions CD released in October 2005. On the record, Jordison was named a "team captain".[56] Root, Taylor, and Gray also contributed to the album.[57] In 2006, Root and Taylor once again returned with Stone Sour releasing their second album Come What(ever) May.[58] Jordison drummed for several bands while on tour including; Ministry (2006) and Korn (2007).[59][60] He also produced 3 Inches of Blood's third album Fire Up the Blades which was released in early 2007.[61] Later in the year Crahan revealed a new side project, Dirty Little Rabbits.[62]

Return from hiatus and All Hope Is Gone (2008–present)

Slipknot has released their fourth studio album All Hope Is Gone on August 20, 2008.[63][64] Preparation for the album started in October 2007 with recording pushed back to February 2008.[65] For this release the band has expressed an interest in making it their heaviest album to date with an expansion of the thrash metal riffing introduced on Vol. 3.[66] However, they also want to make it their most experimental record, and will be including more acoustic guitars and melodic vocals, as well as introducing hi-hats and cymbals to the additional percussion.[67][68] The album will be the band's first work with Dave Fortman as producer.[69] Along with the album, the band have debuted "evolved" masks and uniforms, which match the style of the new album.[70] Slipknot will headline the first ever Mayhem Festival festival in July and August 2008.[71] The band was scheduled to play in the Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2008, but was forced to cancel after drummer Joey Jordison broke his ankle.[72]

Slipknot will also be touring Australia, Japan, Europe and the UK in the latter months of 2008, with the bands Machine Head and Children of Bodom opening at their concerts.[73] The UK dates were announced on August 20, for an early December tour.[74]

Influences and style

The band's primary influences include Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest, Korn, AC/DC, Kiss and Beastie Boys.[75][76][77][78] Death metal, black metal and heavy metal have been mentioned as a key influence on the band's musical direction alongside nu metal, the category the band is generally listed as.[79][80][81][82] They have also stated that they are influenced by industrial bands like Head of David, Godflesh and Skinny Puppy as well as Neurosis and jungle music like Roni Size.[83][84]

Slipknot are seen as pioneers of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal developing a lean and aggressive brand of metal formed from thrash, hardcore and death metal. In this they can be compared with groups such as Pantera, Machine Head, Biohazard, Life of Agony, and Prong and are known for often chaotic and energetic live shows.[85][86][87] The extreme performance style provided by their large line-up featuring a typical heavily down-tuned guitar set-up (lead, rhythm, and bass guitars), two percussionists in addition to the primary drummer, and electronics (samplers and turntables).[88] Robert Cherry of Rolling Stone compared the band's sound to "a threshing machine devouring a military drum corps".[47]

Their early work hosted a diverse range of vocal styles, ranging from rapping to occasional singing to growled vocals.[88] In more recent work, this vocal style remains present, but now includes more melodic singing.[46] The lyrics generally follow a very aggressive tone and feature themes such as darkness, nihilism, anger, disaffection, love, misanthropy and psychosis.[13][46] Rick Anderson of Allmusic regards the group's lyrics as "not generally quotable on a family website".[28] There has been controversy surrounding Slipknot's lyrics, including a case in which a pair of young killers blamed the lyrics from the song "Disasterpiece" for their vicious crime[89] and a case in 2006 in which lyrics from the song "Surfacing" were found at the site of a grave robbing.[90] However, the band has never faced official allegations that their lyrics incite violent or criminal behaviour.[citation needed]

Image and identities

It's our way of becoming more intimate with the music. It's a way for us to become unconscious of who we are and what we do outside of music. It's a way for us to kind of crawl inside it and be able to use it.

Corey Taylor on the masks[91]

The band is known for its attention-grabbing image, the members wear matching uniform jumpsuits and each one as well wears a mask unique from each other's.[13] In the past, their jumpsuits have featured large UPC barcodes printed on the back and sleeves, which are identical and render the same barcode number to the barcode on their first demo, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.[24] Aside from their real names, members of the band are referred to by numbers zero through eight.[13]

With each new album, Slipknot has attained new masks and coveralls.[92][93] The masks haven't changed dramatically with the release of their second and third albums, as the masks are more of an extension of what they previously were. Jordison addressed the issue in an interview in 2004, stating that the change in masks are to show growth and difference within age.[94] During the music video and live performances of their single "Vermilion" the band change their respective masks to death masks made from casts of their own faces.[95] Also in 2004, Gray claimed that the special effects company Screaming Mad George made their masks from their third album cycle,[96] and pictures of the band's masks from their second album cycle can be found on the SMG website.[97]

The masks have been subject of much criticism, generally thought of as a gimmick to try sell their product.[98] The band however strongly object these claims, proclaiming that the masks are used to draw the attention away from themselves and to the music.[99] Several members have said how the masks are a visual representation of how the music makes them feel and how they put the members in an animal-like mentality.[94][42] The coveralls and numbers are an extension of their anti-image concept they created with the masks.[24] The integrity of the masks is also a topic of criticism as band members have appeared outside of Slipknot without the masks. The issue has been addressed by most band members, percussionist Crahan specifically addressed the issue during an interview on The Sauce when discussing the release of their 2006 DVD Voliminal: Inside the Nine, proclaiming that the masks are always going to be part of the Slipknot show.[100]

Death Masks

During the music video and live performances of their single "Vermilion" the band change their respective masks to death masks made from casts of their own faces.[101] The Death Masks make the members of slipknot look dead hence the name of the masks.

Purgatory Masks

Beginning on April 1, 2008, Slipknot's official website began to display splash teasers to promote All Hope Is Gone. During the process there had been around 18 splash teasers, the first nine displayed the band in their new large masks, however the last seemingly shows dark figures with what seems like ordinary size heads. During the recording of the video shoot for Psychosocial, the purgatory masks can be seen being burned in the background. In a interview with Jim Root, he says "they represent the ego of that is Slipknot". [102]

Controversy with Masks

The band's image has started controversy over the years. A portion of the controversy comes from the band Mushroomhead, who, along with their fans, claim that Slipknot stole their image.[103] In 2005, another source of controversy was the band's lawsuit against Burger King, claiming that company created the advertising based band Coq Roq to capitalize on Slipknot's image.[104] The band's lawyer claimed that Burger King had contacted the band's label to get Slipknot to take part in an "advertising campaign designed to motivate young people to vote".[105] Burger King responded to the suit with a countersuit, and in that suit pointed out that many other bands, such as Mudvayne, Kiss, and GWAR have used masks as part of their image, although after private discussions the advertising campaign was dropped.[104][105]
